As other people have pointed out, this is basically your offices version of Twitter/Facebook/Instagram. So why is it so much more than that? Well, people LIKE being on Facebook. No one told them they had to use it. This is the first rule of getting people to use something! If you can build something that people like, theres a much greater chance they will use it without being forced. Thats where Yammer comes in. I like using Yammer and a lot of my co-workers do too. That means more of us keep up with it, and we can check-in with each other more often. I work for an international company so being able to connect with people worldwide is key. Since joining Yammer, Ive had more productive exchanges with co-workers than I could ever hope to have via email. Yammer promotes the free flow of information which means in a healthy work environment everyone can stay on the same page much easier. Policies naturally get spread from person to person and best practices do as well.
On a broader level, I must say -- as a huge Apple fan -- that Microsoft has really been upping their game lately. The suite of apps theyve unrolled for Office 365 is extremely impressive. I now use Invite, Send, Office Lens, Skype for Business, Outlook, Sunrise, and Wunderlist on a daily basis. Thats not even scratching the surface with everything you can do with Sharepoint integrated apps like OneNote, OneDrive, Sway, Sites, etc.
